Michael Wakelam received his BSc in Medical Biochemistry in 1977 and PhD in Biochemistry in 1980 from the University of Birmingham. He has been Director of the Babraham Institute and Honorary Professor of Lipid Signalling in the University of Cambridge Clinical School since 2007. He was previously Professor of Molecular Pharmacology at the University of Birmingham Institute for Cancer Studies and prior to this a Reader in Biochemistry at the University of Glasgow. Between 2004 and 2007 he was Chair of the MRC Molecular and Cellular Medicine Board and a member of MRC Council. He is also an Honorary Professor at Birmingham University and a Visiting Professor at Kings College London. His research focuses upon understanding the role and regulation of lipid signalling pathways in inflammation and cancer and his lab has a major focus upon the use and development of lipidomics methodologies in determining the functions of individual lipid molecular species.
