James Wilsdon is Professor of Research Policy, and Director of Research and Innovation for the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Sheffield, UK. He is also vice-chair of the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA).
From 2014 to 2015, he chaired an independent review of the role of metrics in the management of the UK’s research system, which published its final report as The Metric Tide. More recently, he chaired a European Commission expert group, which published its report on Next Generation Metrics in March 2017.
He is a member of the Council of the UK's Academy of Social Sciences and chairs its Policy Working Group. Previously, he worked as Professor of Science and Democracy at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of Sussex, and Director of Science Policy at the Royal Society, the UK's national academy of science.
